Oncidium Repotting Guide for Healthy Growth
Oncidium Repotting Guide for Healthy Growth
Repotting is an important part of Oncidium orchid care. Fresh medium gives roots better air and moisture balance, helping the plant grow strongly and prepare for future blooms.
When to repot
Repot when the potting medium breaks down, drains poorly, smells sour, or when roots are crowded and new growth is starting. The best timing is usually after flowering or when new roots begin to grow.
Choose a suitable medium
Oncidium roots need both moisture and airflow. A mix with bark, sphagnum moss, perlite, or similar orchid materials can work well if it dries at a pace suitable for your growing space.
Repotting steps
Remove old medium gently, trim dead roots with clean tools, and place the plant so new growth has room to expand. Firm the medium lightly, but do not bury the pseudobulbs.
Aftercare
Keep the plant in bright filtered light with steady airflow. Water carefully while new roots adjust, and avoid heavy fertilizer until the plant resumes active growth.
